Spring in February, acrylic on paper, 15” x 11”

Spring In February

February 23, 2024

The end of last year brought an important ending for me, releasing me to move into the future with energy and enthusiasm. I am still working in oils but you aren’t seeing much because I have been working on a portrait. Portraits are hard and my teacher is patiently insistent that I do it well. Meanwhile, I am exploring ways to meld the two very different approaches to painting that I use - highly skilled and representational vs creative and abstract.

I found an online class which I hope will teach me how to bring some intentionality to my abstract work - seems like a step in the right direction. There are pre-recorded videos, documents with information and exercises, and a monthly live zoom workshop. The zoom workshops are recorded so yesterday I was able to pull up the oldest one and work along with it. First step was to make up a title based on a recent experience. I jotted down a couple dozen unrelated words but the only one suitable to use as a title was Spring in February. Not that great, but it was just practice, so I went with it.

Next step: list the visual elements associated with title. ? ? ? I was still wondering what to write down when the video moved on to the next step: list the emotions you felt with the experience. Oh boy. If I had the words to describe emotions, I wouldn’t need to paint them.

I switched the video off and set about trying to paint something spring-like or February-like. I am working with acrylic on these, which I am unfamiliar with, so I was soon completely frustrated. Could not get the paint to do what I wanted. I gave up entirely trying to paint Spring in February. Instead, I played around with the paint. Is the paper not right? What if I add some medium? How about mixing in some fluid acrylic to make things flow more easily? If I go over this wet paint with a mixture of . . . This was way more fun than trying to list emotions. Satisfied with what I had learned, I scooped up the last bit of paint from my palette and added it to the painting. As I gathered up my brushes to clean them, I looked down at what I had created.

Uhhhhh

I don’t think I could have done a better job depicting Spring in February if I had been trying to.

Creativity Workshop

December 31, 2023

Yin

The restorative dark of winter,
The quiet nourishing waters of the north,
Soft valleys to balance
against the bright light
and creative energy of
the high peaks.

I like the quiet hours of January. Winter afternoons are a good time to get out colored pencils and make mandalas. Creativity flourishes more easily within some some limits and the circle makes a comfortable space to go exploring.

On Thursday, January 25 I am again presenting a Creativity Workshop at the North Shore Library in Glendale. This time we will make mandalas. Working with colored pencils on black paper we will bring light to the dark of the winter afternoon.

Beginners welcome - absolutely no experience or skill as an artist is needed. More experienced artists will explore their creative potential.

There is no fee and all supplies are provided. Space is limited, contact the library to reserve your spot.

Holiday Greetings

November 23, 2023

I will be at the International Gift Shop on December 1st and 2nd, selling notecards and some colored pencil work.

This is one of Milwaukee’s favorite holiday fairs, back for the first time since the pandemic closed everything down.

Hand crafted gifts made here in Milwaukee and fair trade items from around the world. This show is presented by Milwaukee Friends Meeting - you might know them as Quakers. They don’t keep anything for themselves but give a portion of all sales to organizations that support peace, justice and assistance to the needy.

Friday, December 1, 4:00 - 8:00 pm
Saturday, December 2, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

I have been keeping an art journal. I write down a word or two that I pull from the day and then I start painting or drawing. On this day I wrote Big Magic Oatmeal, then started painting with Inktense, Derwent’s water-activated ink, which I have been exploring. I was astonished to see this beautiful tree show up. You can see the words Big Magic Oatmeal hiding behind the topmost branches.

Big Magic Oatmeal

This month my paintings are on display at the North Shore Library in Glendale. If you have a few minutes please stop by. I know the roads are a mess with all the construction but there is plenty of off street parking. I would avoid the Port Washington Rd and Good Hope Rd intersection if you can.

I am also giving a talk at the library on Tuesday, September 12 at 1:00 pm where I will tell some of the story of my transition from a disabled mess to a happy, healthy artist.

Then, on Thursday, September 28, 1:00-3:00, I am leading a creativity workshop. We will use the water-activated ink that I have been exploring. The workshop is open to everyone, from practiced artists to total beginners. It will be fun and it is free so come join us. This class is limited so register with the library to make sure you have a spot.

This is another of my experiments with water-activated ink. I love the bright, vibrant colors.
